Fiji
lies within the tropic of Capricorn and the weather is
warm and mostly sunny all year round. Only in the highlands
will a jumper be needed at night. The summer months between
November and March are hotter, more humid and less predictable.
It might be clear skies and sunshine for weeks on end,
but if a tropical depression is nearby, there might be
cloud, heavy tropical rain and the risk of a cyclone hitting.
Such is weather. The months between May and September are
usually rain-free, drought hitting the driest areas, although
a few days of cloud cover is just as probable as in the
summer months.
The most influencing variation of climate is where in
Fiji you are. The larger islands have distinct weather
patterns between the Leeward side of the islands (north
west) and Windward (south east). Windward Suva, on the
main island of Viti Levu, is renowned for its high rainfall
and lush tropical scenery, as is the Garden Island of Taveuni
which lies to the east of the second largest island of
Vanua Levu. Nadi Airport, on the west side of Viti Levu,
is a dry dusty town with rain clouds often building up
around the mountains in the late afternoons. The offshore
islands are usually cloud free and being small enjoy a
pleasing ocean breezes which ever way the wind blows. |
